Let me start by saying I know this much ->||<- about leather.

I'm wondering if it's possible to dye the CRK pouch black? In my opinion it's the perfect pouch - just not fond of the color. If not, does someone made the same pouch in black?

Thanks,

Rick

I am sure you could. I used to make knives and sheaths in my late teens into my mid 20's. The leather dye from Tandy Leather, I believe it was Fibblings Dye or something thereabouts worked great. You can also buy it at a good craft store like Michaels or A.C Moore. You put it on with a dobber and it was indeed permeant. The one catch is that it smells really strong for a Long time. But when dyed, it was indeed Black......!!! I used to dye mine and just hang them outdoors for awhile. If you don't Have to have black and just want a darker brown rather than the tan, you can put some silicone on the tan sheath and that will darken it as well.

Easily, but you want to make sure the leather is sealed afterward or you'll be seeing the black dye on the front of your trousers next summer when the dye bleeds. :D

I didnt like the lightness of the leather, but it does darken with time.

my first crk, the pouch is almost black, while mnandi is almost new and still very light.

these pouches look better with age.

I actually tracked down the company that makes CRK's leather sheaths and asked them if they could make them in black. He told me that they could, but it would have to come from CRK itself as the actual leather stock would have to be selected by CRK and an order placed.

Perhaps we should start calling CRK as a group (those interested in a black sheath; I'd take 3 of them) and ask them for black leather sheaths. Then they would know there is a market.

I bet sales of the black ones would surpass sales of the brown ones if they were both offered. Heck, I'd prefer the light brown color they use on their fixed knives over the dark brown one.

You could get a (good) cobbler to do this for you - very quick and easy if he knows what he's doing.

Thanks guys for the response. I'm actually surprised there isn't a black version or choice already.

I think letting CRK know there's demand is a good option as well. Personally I would buy 2-3 of them.

I think I will start another thread that people could express then interest and then I will notify CRK.

I have some CRK Calf skin scraps laying around and Fiebings Professional oil dye and some other pro dyes as well. I've give it a shot and let you know.

I'm going to repeat my friendly advice to make sure you seal the leather afterward if you intend to carry the pouch in a pocket - unless you want large, permanent, black splotches on your clothes. BTDT. :D

I got us covered, I own a small leather business. I have multiple sealers and dyes. We good! ;) I've already dyed my micarta Insingo, I don't see how this could be more difficult. lol

So, do you prefer the lacquer sealers or the water-based acrylics? I've used both and would be interested in your opinion. :)

It depends on what I'm using it for. I use Acrylic Resolene for most things that require almost a waterproofing. For me that would be belts. I use sealers like Atom Wax and Eco Flo Pro Finish for all my veg tanned. There i do have a pref for Glossy over the Matte. And thats only because Matt Finish Eco Flo smells like an enviormental hazard and takes days to get back the original leather smell.

I may not be the best guy to ask though because of the leather I use. The belt leather I use is a English Bridle style so it's tanned the color versus dyed that way. The colors don't run but the sealer gives a nice look. The veg tanned I use I bombard with sealers. So typically I'll use a Chamberlains 1 and 3 to condition and water protect and then I'll do two coats of Atom Wax and then top it all off with Eco Flo.

Edges I seal witih either edge paint or I burnish them with gum taraganth.

Agreed, Im pretty sure Fiebings and Sharpie are using the same formula. They sure do smell the same.
