Black Emerson La Griffe unavailable, what else to get as a self-defense neck knife?

Hey guys, I am looking to buy a neck knife solely for self-defense. I read many of the topics regarding neck knives, and that they are probably not the best option for SD. I have my protection covered mostly with my gun and a large folding knife, but I really want to add a neck knife. I guess I sound like the common tactiCOOL mall ninja, but I do love knives and collecting them, and a neck knife would make a great pendant. :)
It seems that Emerson La Griffe is the winner in this category, but the black version, that I want, is back-ordered in most online stores, so I would get it later. HideAwayKnife is something that I will be getting soon, but I would carry it in a different manner. I live outside US and I have to order from the major stores due to shipping problems, so I cannot get some of the custom neck knives I saw on the forum.
I have been looking into knives like Cold Steel Pro Guard and their Mini Tac series, CRKT Bear Claw, S&W HRT Badge and others. I would not normally bother you with such a topic, but unfortunately, none of them are available in my country, so I have to order by just looking at them on the internet. So, any advice on what to get would be great, thanks. :)

I will definetely buy an Emerson La Griffe in the near future and I like the black oxide version better, there is not a particular reason why I need it in black. :)

Although I'm not normally much of a tanto fan, i do have a Cold Steel MiniTac Tanto, & I love it. I hardly ever hear anything about this knife on the forums, which is a bit of a shame, as its a great little knife. I generally carry an EsKabar, which I think is a more useful EDC blade, but for a purely self defense blade, I actually think the MiniTac might be the better choice. it has a nice, deep choil and the best G10 I've ever felt, this stuff is super grippy. It also has useful jimping along the spine, so all in all the ergos and traction are great. Its a stout little knife,as well, quite thick, which also helps it fill the hand nicely, as well as adding strength.

Well, honestly, any of the ones you listed are basically the same, or close enough to it, as the La Griffe, and should work fine until you can find the black La Griffe you're looking for. I like the Perin finger hole claw style too. With a knife that small you're obviously going to be slashing rather than stabbing, so a straight or hawkbill blade will do the most damage. As for going with serrations or not, I'd personally lean towards non serrated. That comes from my experience with my Spyderco Tasman Salts, where I found the serrations were more likely to bind instead of cut - and also my Spyderco SPOTs, where I also preferred the plain edge over the serrated. Unfortunately I lost my plain edge and finding a replacement that didn't cost $200 has been fruitless.

All the knives you listed are pretty inexpensive. Find a store that'll ship to your country that has all or several of them and choose which one you like best.

FYI the black oxide La Griffe is not available at all any more, they are all crincle coat black finish now.

@osovadis, do you like the sheath of it? I am leaning towards Cold Steel's products, but I have seen many people hate their sheaths.

@emopunker2004, thanks for that, I did not know of its existence.

@Haze, I just copied the "black oxide" from Emerson's site to be more exact in my reply, thanks for clarifying.

Mantis has some fine offerings in that department from what I have come to understand. ;)
