Hey all,

Deciding on a few different models of knives for outdoor/hunting/camping use. Just wondering if anyone knows if the Black Epoxy used on a lot of blades is non-toxic. From time to time I cut up small pieces of meat and sometimes stick bits over small flame with the knife. Should I just get a regular metal blade or does it matter?

I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't ingest enough coating to really matter, I wouldn't worry about it if I was you. Also the coating helps to prevent rust so it may be a plus if you are considering a knife for food preparation and camping.

I am assuming that it wont matter one bit.

As far as holding meat over the fire with the knife....I'd recommend a stick.

Cured epoxy will probably be safer than petroleum-based oils people use to lube steel blades with.

Putting a knife into a fire is just wrong.

Cutting up meat with epoxy coated blade is OK.

Putting same blade in fire is not.
.
Bad for steel. Bad for epoxy. Not sure how toxic thermally decomposed epoxy is but suggest you don't try to find out by experiment on self.
