On one of today's blems Uncle Bill offered for sale he mentioned patching a small crack in the horn with black epoxy. I use epoxy all the time, but what do you all recommend for mixing with it before application to get the black color?

Thanks,

Svashtar

You know, I noticed everyone mentions super-glue or colored epoxy, but it occurs to me that the alrady black JB Weld or JB Quik might work just as well? That stuff is harder than hell when it dries, but maybe it is harder to work with. <?>

Just a thought.

The horn is usually not -exactly- black.

Try a sise-by-side check before you apply anything
if you really want a close match.
? how well does jbweld polish up?
I'd expect well, but haven't used it myself.

Never seen black JB weld myself, stuff I get always mixes up to a medium gray.

I use Devcon 2 ton epoxy with a bit of black model paint for black repiars.

JB WELD does not hold up to vinegar...acetic acid causes it to go all gooey..this from Don Fogg's web site...

I use Acra Glass Bedding compound...the advantage is that is actually takes 24 hours to cure. It "sinks" into the material and will never shrink or crack...GOOD STUFF! It also comes with a little packet of black coloring...and brown...a little bit goes a long way!

Guys, You can get Brownell's AcraGlas from most good gun stores...sometimes even Wally WOrld...or direct form Brownell's in Montezuma Iowa....

I use little syringes to measure the right amounts...

I genereally mix a small test batch to make sure I have it right.

It is the best...

Shane, thanks for the tip. I have bought so much from Brownell's that I have them on speed dial, and have seen them mention the Acra-glass many times but have never tried it, having never had the guts to glass-bed a rifle yet.

Shane, BTW, what kind of knife is that in your avatar pic? Looks amazing. Kind of like an M43 hybrid with a carved brass handle?
