Sitting at home I have a black handled Case 3 Bladed Stockman which I believe may have carbon steel blades due to discoloration. This knife belonged to my father and is at least 35 years old. I am not familiar with the dating system that Case used. Since the knife is not with me due to an extended trip with the miltary I can't describe any markings.

I don't ever remember seeing a Case knife with black handles in any shows or collections anywhere. I believe that the material may be bakelite but without having the knife in front of me I amnot for sure.

When approximately was a knife like this made?

I am also Emailing Case to find some info from them.

The material is what collectors describe as rough black. Do not have books here but I would guess 1940 to 64. Known by Case collecters as the Case XX period.

Bastid is right, it could be rough black. It could also be smooth black. Rough black has a "jigged" or textured surface like bone. It was used around the WWII time frame as bone was in short supply. That would date it roughly (no pun intended) from about 1940 to about 1950.

If it is smooth black, it could be from almost any time period. If it is a carbon steel 3-blade in smooth black, that narrows it a little bit - could be any year up to about '81.

We would need the exact blade markings and pattern # or description to really date it.
