Hi folks ,

I was wondered if someone could help me to chose one of those. Both are similar but Black Jack use A2 tool steel for the blade and Cold Steel use San Maai.

Thanks in advance

"San Mai" from Cold Steal is just low end laminated stainless.
Plus, they are Cold Steal, and feature the worst warranty in the business.

Blackjack all the way, although I think they use 1095 not A2. Could be wrong.

I believe Ken Warner still heads up the 'new' Blackjack.
A great guy and I would recommend getting the Blackjack knife...

Or, if you have the chance to get an older Effingham Blackjack knife, get that one, too!

Regards,
Mike

Ken Warner had sell the blackjack line to the largest knives distibutor.(i don't remember the name)
but the Blackjack classic is still made by Mike Stuart & he's crew of Bark River.
the 2008 blackjack 1-7 are made of A-2 tool steel and i'm very very impressed by the great toughness and edge retention of this steel when heat treated by Mike.
The Blackjack 1-7 is awesome,i really love this knife, the steel, the convex edge, the handle, the sheath all is perfect.

Blackjack Classic is one of the best brand on the market.
total quality.
I have only one 1-7 i must buy at least another because they are great.

i had never try the cold steel san mai but cold steel knives had NEVER Impressed me.
sorry for my poor english.
thanks

Blue Ridge Knives is the new owner of Blackjack Knives. If you want more info on the Blackjack knives you can search (BlackJack Knives Forum)on google.
thanks

My Effie BJ #1-7 goes with me on my daily travels. I was carrying it in my hands, this summer, when I encountered two bears on The North Island. I'm glad I didn't have to go tooth and nail. Butt, yes, Mike Stewart makes a great knife and I understand he is back to making them to the old specs.

The 1-7 is a much nicer knife in general. They're both non-exact copies of a randall model 1, but I think Blackjack "got it" and cold steel just traced the pattern on a bar of steel and called it a day.

Edit: typos are fun!!

If I remember, the BJ is based on a Randall #1 with a 7 inch blade, thus 1-7. Mike Stewart at Bark River is making the classic line for Blue Ridge knives. I do not know if the ones by them are A2 or 1095.

I have a fond place in my heart for the Cold Steel R1 Military Classic, as I had an older version given to me by my Scoutmaster with the old 400 series stainless blade, guard, and micarta bolsters. I happened to really like the feel and ergonomics of the handle.

That being said, I would pick the Blackjack today. A nicer company to deal with, "Ye Olde Standby" carbon steel, and a generally better-executed design.

the 2008 are made with the great A-2 tool steel but many dealers sell the 2006 wich is very well tempered 1095.

As i said above you can ask any questions to Mike Stewart at the BlackJack Forum

I have an old 1-7. Its pretty much a safe queen. Its what got me into convex grinds so heavily.

Had been looking for the Blackjack small hunter and finally found them at Smoky Mtn knive works. With Ken selling out, it must be old stock. Dont know what the 8CR13 steel is in them, but great price...less then $20....a nice sturdy knife...
