At one time we had to grind brass knives. They were terrible - used to clog all the stone up. They were for electricians, so they wouldn't cause a spark when cutting cables, and we used to paint them black for the Army, so they wouldn't flash when the sun was shining. We used to get a lovely finish on - and then they'd paint 'em!
Tweedale's Directory lists John B Holland in business as spring knife manufacturer from 1948 until his death in 1962. It suggests that advertising were a speciality.
Interesting stealth knife Robin! By coincidence, I was reading a book yesterday, with this account from an old Sheffield grinder:
Thanks Jack, I knew you would come up with something great![]()
Thanks SK, when I found only J.R. Holland in Levines and no mention of J.B I may have incorrectly assumed that this knife was J.R Holland. Although the black spud is something I haven't seen and it kind of fits the military issue associated with J.R. Holland. I may ask Bernard Levine what he thinks.
Best regards
Robin
Doesn't the tang actually say 'J.B.Holland'?
Yes,now I believe it does. When I did a search the only company in Levines was JR Holland, thus at the time I assumed it was a bad strike. I don't have the knife yet, but I'm figuring it's a B. I liked the story that I invented better though ))))).
