black oxide on Buck strider 889

I got a buck strider 889 recently and was really impressed by the knife.

however, the black oxide seems to stain everything I cut, even after I try wiping it clean with dishwashing liquid.

how can I solve this problem ?

I polished mine with Flitz. Took a lot of it off but the blade is still black, just not the matte black it was. No more staining. Looks better imo, I was wishing it would take ALL the black off.

I have the same problem with my Nighthawk. It gets on all the food I slice with it. Hope the oxide is ok to eat

Had the same issue...initially. Have found that after use and washing several times that it doesn't happen.
Would really be apparent when slicing potatoes.
I would think that Blue Sky's tip would work :)

I traded for my nighthawk used, all the black residue was worn off from Goose scraping his drains and removing roadkill from the highway...
The blade still has the black oxide color but no staining on anything!
I love this thing!!

Try cleaning it off with white lightning, denatured alcohol, or acetone. dish soap wont cut it.

Jim...I was just kidding about all that stuff I used the Hawk for :D
Think the most gross thing it ever cut was some Spam ;)

Interesting about the alcohol Hang-Em...I end up using my EDCs in the kitchen and for bbqs, chow halls, whatever. I use my knife very often...even at my own dinner table.
It took some time for the black to come off even after regular use and washing. Though it did stop leaving residue/marks after awhile. Longer than I would like.

Thanks for the pointers as I was thinking of getting another black Nighthawk and now know the quick route to address something that bugged me.

 Question...does the alcohol have to be denatured? I do wipe my EDCs down using regular alcohol that I have as a hand cleaner in the kitchen from time to time.

Try very fine steel wool as if you were polishing out a blueing job on a gun. It will develop a gloss but that ain't bad. That black oxide coating is really porus.

denatured alcohol is just straight alcohol. The stuff you buy at the store that is not denatured hasn't been filtered as well, and is watered down. You can use either the denatured is just stronger.

The story just wouldn't have been as good without that info, thats all :D
