Black palm scales - polishing issue

Hi there,
I have had a hard time getting a nice shine out of black palm scales. I have tried brown rouge and grey rouge but I am just getting a real foggy look on the handle. Does anyone have any experience cleaning this kind of scale up?

I actually even tried a polyurethane gloss and that didnt work well.

Does it matter if the scales are bought stabilized or not? Not really knowledgable about that stuff.


I sanded down to 1500 grit, when wet, looks good of course. Buffed it looks foggy and never shines up. I tried tung oil also and didnt really absorb.

Never worked stabilized stuff, but all my stabilized scales are gloss.

Try using a wax; I use Howards on all my wood scales. Takes more than a few apps, but I like it.
Here's a bocote handle with just wax:
