Black rust?

I'm sure this has been mentioned constantly but I've got an old kukri blade that has become almost covered in a dark rust (see pics) that I can't seem to get off.

I've tried a bit of wd40 and some CRC but it won't scrub off even a little bit.

I've no idea of the blades composition as it was a gift and looks to be pretty old. I dont know much about blades and so I don't really wanna waste the money on a fix this not gonna work or might even worsen the problem. Looking for some help. Any suggestions?

Flitz is pretty good for removing pepper spots from steel.

For pictures upload to a host like Imgur and copy the link here.

Just use it and enjoy it... Short of grinding, or possibly some sort of media blasting, you aren't going to get it shiny and new looking.

Yeah I think you're probably right, doesn't bother me too much but it's just such an old blade I'd hoped to get it looking brand new again. Thanks anyway

You could probably clean it up, some, with sand paper, if you are really of a mind to do so...but you probably wouldn't get it to a consistent bright finished. Most, including myself, would recommend against that approach.
That black "rust" actually helps protect against red rust, which is far more damaging. It occurs naturally with use, on "carbon steels".
