I have wondered about this for awhile... I have a 1984 FG 110 that I bought pre-owned a few years back. It came with a brown sheath. It is darker in color, not light colored or a distressed leather sheath. It has 3 Bucks on the snap.
I don't know if it is the correct sheath or not. But I have noticed 110's and 112's that are suppose to be new in box, and some have brown sheaths, some have black sheaths.

Is there a rhyme or reason to this? Was there a specific time frame that the brown sheaths were used ?

Years ago,all the fingewr groove models came in brown sheaths, and regular 110's/112's came with black sheaths,i'm sure thats changed some since those days..

338375,
For some time in the mid to late 1980s, Buck provided brown leather sheaths with their standard factory fingergroove models. Buck is closed today, but Joe Houser may be able to provide a more specific time line for this when he returns. I think he was away last week. Also, keep in mind that once a knife is shipped to a dealer, sheath exchanges are always possible. Sometimes they are intentionally switched, sometimes it is inadvertent.
I hope this helps a little!!

I bought some 111s last year with brown sheaths. I much prefer them over the black sheaths, even though I know there's no difference between the two except color.

I like the brown also but all my 110 and 112 are black. Guess I gotta order a CS and pick brown sheath:)

Larry's right sometimes they get switched . A few years back I bought a 4 dot 110FG, NIB from a seller and it had all the paperwork plus the brown leather sheath, catalog # 381 marked "NEW" on the box
and the sheath has Buck one time on the snap . So, 338 yours could be right about the time (1984-mid 80's ) Buck started receiving sheaths w/ the 3X Buck on them . Good info.. DM

Thanks everyone. The info is much appreciated...

I do kinda like the brown ones. Just something a little different I guess.
Actually I wish they would all come with the Distressed leather sheaths :D

Then you might run across a black AND brown one. Yes, it is a Buck 110 sheath.

store fronts quite often will switch sheaths to please a customer
so many times some one buys a NIB from the store
and will argue it is "factory" tell hell .. well you know
they never think of that it may be the exception
or a mistake or some ones doing on purpose

Good point Dave

Yeah,,,Just messing with y'all on this one. I bought a clammie one time off ebay on the cheap. It was advertised as having been under water in a basement for a few days or so but had dried out.

So when I got it, it and the 110 reeked of mildew. Of course the 110 cleaned up like a dream. But when I took the spray lysol to that sheath, I was pretty surprised when the black started coming off. I just happened to think to take some pics.

And it was only that part. The rest stayed black. Just one of those Buck Mysteries that I have a little fun with.

Don't go rubbing lysol on your sheaths!!! :)
