Has anyone found stainless hardware for the scales in black? I recently replaced my hardware with stainless screws. It looks good with stripped Beckers but w/ my coated blades, I like the black look better.... I know, I know :)

hmmm. maybe worth a try. Do you know of a paint type that would be durable on stainless screws? I am not thinking it would last too long.

As long as you have regular stainless steel screws, you can hold the parts over an open flame (I used our gas stove) and then drop them into a glass of water. They come out a dark purplish color. I also switched the screws to slotted types, so I can take the scales off with either my SAK Huntsman or the four-way driver on my keyring. In the pic here they look more of a brownish color, but they're actually darker. I think the flash made them look lighter.

Hm. Never had any problems with it myself. If you want it more even just dip them in PCB etchant for a few minutes prior. *shrug*

That's an idea (etchant) I never tried - next time I switch out my fasteners, I'll try it. I used to sell decorative hardware (decorative = usually a plated finish), and each piece was dipped between steps in the plating process. Makes sense.

Not sure about stainless, (don't remember if I've ever done it), after restoring slotted screws for old shotguns I'd heat the screw head up until a magnet would not stick and quench in used motor oil to add carbon and harden. They come out a deep black.
