I've been reading the Newbie Board, but couldn't find any posts on blackened blades. I would appreciate any info on where or how to blacken them. Black epoxy powder, parkerizing or whatever. Bluing is not quite what I'm looking for. Most of the ones I hope to make will have the usual bright finish.

One more quickie...on Tung Oil, high sheen or low sheen?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

In the April, Blade Magazine, there is an article on blade coatings, Ricky Fowler uses Precision brand tool black, you can get it from MCS.

You can also get parkerizing kits from Brownell's. Other companies offer them as well. You can even find a distributer that sells them on eBay. ( I know, I know.) I have one coming in the mail that has enough solution to make 6 gallons of black parkerizing medium. It only cost about $35 plus shipping. There's enough solution to do a lot of knives there.

You can cold blue any steel and blacken it. It also increases rust resistance somewhat. Brownell's sells "Super Blue" by Birchwood Casey, which I've had very good results with on my Marbles Woodcraft. You just degrease the part with denatured alcohol and rub on with a cue tip. It will change color in less than a minute. Polish with steel wool when done.
Another option is the Aerosol Baking Laquer from Brownells, but this requires baking the metal part.

I think I saw over at knifeart.com under the maker's supply link that you could purchase some spray laquers that after spraying the blade you bake it in the oven to set the coating. It comes in black and green too!
