Black steel??

I am having a custom knife built but it still in the planning stages Is there such a thing a black steel???
Or a way to blacken steel that will last under use? I want the bolsters to be black and scales to be white for contrast

Best solution to have black blade is coating with:
BoronCarbide - hardest
Titanium Nitrid, Titanium Aluminium Nitrid
Amorphus Carbon also named as Diamond Like Coating.
(There is also some Tungsten coating, I do not really know.)

Evrerithing else will wear out much sooner - Epoxy, Teflon...
Steel also can be etched and gun blued but it scratch too.

So if it is possible to get BC or TiN or TiAlN - better use them. If polished it looks great:

Yes, it is CPM S30V. I do not think that there is any limitation on steel type.

Vassili is correct. The coatings can be applied over any type of steel.
