Okay so I know almost every knife comes in a satin finish and a black TiNi version. How does the black coating on the blade hold up? I have a S&W S.W.A.T knife and the black coating is coming off. I just want to know how well the black coating stays on there, especially on the Benchmades. Thanks

It varies from company to company, but I haven't had too much visible wear or scratches on any of my BMs.

Sog uses black Tini.
Benchmade uses Benchkote
Kershaw/ZT uses Tugsten DLC, Titanium Nitride, Titanium Oxide, and PVD (I think that'd be ionbond or something)

The win for toughest would go to Tugsten DLC--rockwell hardness in the 80's.

Agreed, my BM and black bladed spydercos are holding up well, some scratchs to the texture but not color. My Kershaw blurs are pretty good too. My S&W and ontarios are showing lots of wear but i am not convinced their finish is as hardened.

S&W coatings are for show only and wear off very easily. I am most familiar with Kershaw. The DLC is great stuff. What looks like scratches is usually residue from what the blade came in contact with. They also have a few boron carbide coatings which are even harder than the DLC coatings IIRC.

The only coated blades I've had are a Kershaw Scallion and a Gerber F.A.S.T.draw. The Kershaw held up well, but then ironically got scratched on an aluminum yogurt lid! I'm really impressed, however, with the coating on the Gerber. The steel itself is mediocre at best, but the coating is tough as nails!

The only knife that I use hard that has a coating on it is the Gerber LMF II and its extremely wear resistant

The aluminum deposited it's own "coating" on the actual knife itself--it should come right off with some windex.
