Well, I finally collected a few black knives which I am really happy with in their appearance. Now, a problem already. Although I do not use my knives heavily I already have a spot where the black finish came off my CRKT Crawford.

Anyone know of an easy to apply, fairly long lasting Black touch-up?

I don`t know of any way to touch up a black blade, but I have a Marine Corps knife by K-Bar that Used gun blue(cold)on it. It worked o.k.. I purchased thi gun blue kit at K-mart.

It is difficult to do properly.

Cold bluing (i think) only works properly on carbon or tool steels. Stainless steels resist the chemicals in the bluing solution.

Generally all coatings can scratch particularly polymer based spray and bake or teflon types. The best coatings are ceramic ones that are PVD applied such as Boron Carbide which is very hard and scratch resistant or DLC Diamond like Coating.

WOW You hit it just right. That is exactly the kind of data I want. Is there a good article somewhere which lists the various tenacity, and scratch resistance properties of the more common coatings used?? I still say a vast majority of all knives I like right now are black, but have a wide variety of coatings. Trying to find a fairly comprehensive list. Kind of like the types for various steels, but in this coatings. Any idea where I could look for something like that?
