I am thinking I would like to get a Contego eventually. I am wondering which Cerakote color shows less ware? I would think the gray would age better but I am not sure. What do you guys think?

I have the clear. It's more of a grey actually. It seems to be wearing well. I bought the grey because I heard horror stories of how the handle would rough up your hands. I thought that if I modified the handles and gimping, I wouldn't have to refinish them (the liners or back spacer) black. But I found no reason to modify the handles. I think they are fine the way they are. If the blade (clear) ever starts looking really bad I will strip the finish off of the blade. The rest of the knife does not have the finish, so I think it would look good. The black knife has black liners. That would still look good with a stripped blade, or a guy could always recoat the black blade.

After using both black (810) and clear/*grey (940-121) Cerakote, the grey will hold up longer over time and show less wear.

While they both are the same coating, I find the black to be more prone to noticeable wear (perks of being black, you'll see every scratch).. With the grey, you'll still see wear, however, it will be less in your face.. Like longun stated above - if it gets too bad, just strip the coating off :) there's always that alternative after a few years.

The good thing about Cerakote (and BK for that matter) is the material is bonded to the blade, so even if there's wear it still protects from corrosion and rust. Given M4 is a tool steel (and like M2) it needs 'coverage'. I agree - the clear (gray) version keeps the blade looking clean longer.

Spot on you beat me to it. :)
