Good Evening!

Just curious (yet again), why is black the only color offered for BKT knives? I'm cool with it but I was just wondering if it was a choice to exclude other colored blade colorings? I sure don't mind it but was just wondering what the deal was.

Thanks!

Why? Probably a cost thing. You make a bunch of different colors and they don't sell, you are stuck with them. Black is pretty standard. When Becker was under Camilus, the BK7, BK9 and BK10 came in a desert tan color. Very nice. I have the BK10 in tan and it is gorgeous.

There you go, you had to play the race card!

And

And

You can get them in any color you want, so long as it's black.

There im done .

Wasn't there some successful business owner that said that back in the 30's or 40's? I just can't remember who it was......;)

Dear Santa Ka-Bar, please bring me the grivory orange handles I have seen pics of in the Becker blade database (sticky thread), and a magnum camp...and a ESEE 5 - don't judge meeeeeee! :D

I think 'ole Flexxx has a little more RAT in him than he let's on.

Yeah it was Henry Ford and he was talking about the Model T. He said it in 1909 but that "all black" policy didn't even take effect for another five years.
Wikipedia said:
Ford wrote in his autobiography that he told his management team in 1909 that in the future “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black”.[22]

However, in the first years of production from 1908 to 1914, the Model T was not available in black[23] but rather only grey, green, blue, and red. Green was available for the touring cars, town cars, coupes, and Landaulets. Grey was only available for the town cars, and red only for the touring cars. By 1912, all cars were being painted midnight blue with black fenders. It was only in 1914 that the "any color as long as it is black" policy was finally implemented.

Anyways back to the real topic, why not just paint your knife? There are tons of options available, Duracoat for instance comes in tons of colors. I just don't know how long any user applied coating would last but that seems to be a problem with the factory coloring too.

On another Ford related side note, anyone here ever read Brave New World?

It is a cost, style thing. If you do all black, you don't have to stock multiple color of paint, you don't have the down time involved with swapping colors at the factory.

Plus, most of the larger knives at Kabar, are decidedly "military" in nature and black is the most useful color for most military.

That said, I'm not a fan of black blades. Or coated blades either. I tend to strip mine when I get them, and polish and/or patina them. Coating wears away anyway, and I think they look like crap that way. Plus, I think a smoother blade surface is more efficient for use.

Either way, black it is, though I am trying to convince Ethan and Kabar that different colored handles, and material are good aftermarket ideas.

cuz they know what a can of krylon costs? :)

there's probably only a handful of generic colors they can choose from... some grey, black, or wait, that's all :)

in the entire industry, the choices are pretty limited that way.

except maybe in kitchen knives (KAI), black is the new black.

Just because I own Esee knives don't mean I cant talk shit right.......

Pink izula is on its way..LOL
