Blacked out Spyderco Police?

Couple questions. There is a blacked out Spyderco Police model C07S on ebay. When did Spyderco sell a fully serrated blacked out Police, or did they make them for a specific knife dealer to sell? Was it a limited production / or sprint run? I would appreciate any info on this knife. Thanks. Pictures below:

Spyderco did sell a titanium carbonitride coated black Police model back in the late 80s or early 90s (the G-2 tang stamp on this one is in the later end of the period), but other distributers did some aftermarket coatings as well, most notably J.F. Jensen. From what I have seen (and I'm working from all secondary sources here, so I could easily be wrong) the Spyderco black coating was shiny and the aftermarket were a flat finish, so at a guess I'd say this one was one of Jensen's.

Impressive. That's a lot of good information, thank you yablanowitz. Gives me something to look into a little more.

John Jensen and others used a variety of black coatings, unfortunately John is out of the knife business, I don't know if he is willing to comment. He was by far the most prolific of the "official" C07 upgraders, his SEAL team knives come to mind.
As for Spydercos black coating, can't really say it was shiny but it certainly had a different texture and look to the non-factory knives, it also seemed to wear better around the pivot area.

I purchased mine on the secondary market, no box or paperwork so I can't prove it is original, but the black appears to have been applied prior to assembly. That leads me to believe it is a factory rather than aftermarket job.

Thanks pmel018. I noticed the same thing when i researched Jensen, no longer keeping with the buisness. He still has his contact info listed on the site.

Good point yablanowitz, this one doesnt appear to have the coating underneath (prior to assembly). So im thinking this isnt a factory coating. Plus it has that flat looking finish.
