greetings all,
had a discussion here about when emerson started offering black-coated blades. my guess was the "original" cqc's were uncoated. my mach1 from 2000 [my earliest emerson] has a blackened blade. any help would be appreciated. thanks and best regards to all.

The earliest known examples of black bladed Emersons are a few fixed blades from about 1990, and at least 2 Viper 3s from the same date. Ernie made very few black bladed knives until the advent of the CQC8 in 1995, the first few of which had titanium oxide coatings. These are highly sought after, btw. That was concurrent with the CQC9s, with maybe a total of 5 or 6 blackout blades. He then tried Black 'T' coatings, which weren't favored. Once the factory opened up in 1997, most of the production models began seeing a black option, most famously the 1998 Commanders.

Is the current coating Cerakote? That's what I thought I saw somewhere.
