Hey guys,
Well, as I promised in another thread, I said I would do a comparison and review of the two knives.....well, here it is:
At first, being the MOD CQD Mark 1 fanboy that I am, I was highly disappointed (and still am) that they decided to discontinue the MOD CQD Mark 1 in favor of the Mark 1 Type E. Searching everywhere for a Type E, I finally found one being sold out of a small knife shop in MA, through Ebay. I paid $69 shipped priority mail. Now for the down-low:
The Type E came in a nice little box, and upon opening, the knife was in the closed position, in bubblewrap. Also included was a warranty card. The blade had a nice, thin coat of oil on it upon opening.
Blade is the same 3.75 inches, modified spear point blade of the MOD version, except the blade on this one is made of AUS8A, rather than 154CM. The blade is coated with a non-reflective teflon coating (rather than DLC) that has not faultered or marred while cutting cardboard, 550 cord, or the plastic straps on an MRE box.
Edge out of the box was hair popping sharp, and even nicked me, drawing blood, while shaving my arm. The blade opens with the same, solid, resounding "CLUNK" of the MOD version. Fit and finish are OUTSTANDING......not knowing the price, you would easily think this thing was a $150 + knife. The plunge lock is very secure, with no lateral or horizontal play prevelant. The secondary safety works excellent, and as it should.
The handle is made of a polymer that has the same feel of that of my Glock 19C. The traction spots on the handle, are actually machined into the handle, rather than the 3M tec-trac inserts on the MOD version. Their not as "sticky", but they do indeed achieve thier job. The handle is about maybe 1 or 2 millimeters less wide than that of the MOD version. I see this as a good thing, as it makes a difference when pocketing the Type E.
Inside, you can see the 420J stainless skeleton that runs the whole body of the knife, on both sides of the handle. The 420J skeleton also runs all the way up to where the thumbstuds (stoppins) hit the handle, and provide even more reinforcement for lockup, and to brace any hard openings. I suppose this is to prevent damage to the plunge lock when "wrist flicking" the Type E open.
The Type E has the same Tungsten Carbide glassbreaker, except it too, along with the pocket clip, is coated with the black teflon finish. The seatbelt cutter is in the same place as the MOD version, and works very well.....I cut an old MOLLE strap on my old assault pack, and it worked to standard with no problem. Like a hot knife through butter.
The screws have the same black, teflon coating as the blade, and instead of the hex screws of the MOD version, they are actually a little bigger, and are TORX screws.
Overall, though, not much more to say about it....what I can say, is fit and finish are TOP NOTCH...I cannot stress this enough. The value is outstanding.....overall, think of the CQD Mark 1 Type E, as a civilian version of the MOD CQD Mark 1......a little bit lighter than the MOD version, and a little bit less wide. I didn't really notice it while carrying it in my pocket. My last thoughts are that I would highly reccommend this knife for anyone who is looking for a great knife with rescue capabilities, or someone who is serving in the military (like myself) or any LEO. This knife is more than worth the $60 I paid for it.

SIDE NOTE: The Type E also works great with the Prylon Sheath, but due to the fact that the Type E is 1 or 2 MM thinner, the retention on the knife isn't as secure, but will definitely stay in there pretty good.
