Blackhawk sheath

I wanted to upgrade the sheath for my USAF Pilots Survival Knife and I picked up one of Blackhawks 5 1/2" OD sheaths. Lots of velcro, which has it's advantages and disadvantages, but I'm getting used to it.

Anyone here have one of these sheaths? Whatcha putting in the sheaths pouch? I keep wanting to put a nice minikit in the pouch, but it's smaller than my Becker sheaths pouch, so I'm busy looking for a container that will fit. Or, I'll just leave the Craftsman pocket stone and BSA hotspark and call it good.

I have the Spec-OPS version of that sheath(7" version). I keep a Swedish Firesteel, a Victorinox locking SAK, fish hooks, and a EZ-Lap diamond pocket stone.

In the sheath I did with Spec Ops I keep a WSI P-60 firestarter/ceramic rod, a SAK, microlight, 550 cord, small compass, and some snares.

I also believe the sheath for the AF Survival Knife could use some help. I didn't realize that Blackhawk and Spec Ops had suitable sheaths. Those alternative sheaths look to be rather large. Are they? While I appreciate a decent survival knife I don't know that I would like to look like Rambo. Generally I use my Mora but there are tasks I would like a heavier duty knife. Maybe the AF Survival knife will serve.

I was issued an AF survival knife with my USAR team. You're right, the stock sheath left a lot to be desired. I replaced it with a Blackhawk sheath. It works great for it. Actually made for this knife. I just have a multitool in the pocket, which fits fine. I suspect that I could put a small kit in it if I wanted.

I know that from time to time Blackhawk gets put down about manufacturing "off shore," but I've never had any problems with their gear. They're one of the local guys here in Tidewater (Along with London Bridge Trading Co.) I do business with both.

Well Lets see if my above link works.Actually there are many threads about Blackhawks Gear from Overseas.I wrote two e-mails addressing some issues, and as expected not so much as an acknowledgement of my messages. This was several months ago.Personally,I can't see spending money on sub-par quality from Korean and Vietnamese manufacturers. There are a few gear makers that make all their stuff totally in the USA,and top quality besides.Just a couple examples, SOE,Spec-OPS,Eagle Industries. In fact the prices are equal or better than Blackhawk in most cases.I really can't see buying Blackhawk Gear, especially when they don't seem to care about consumers opinions,or America's Jobs, only profits. We need to keep some jobs here in the USA,IMHO.

longbow50, can I ask how much it set you back? I have my original 1966 or 67 Camillus PSK and the sheath (no metal tip) is hammered. I need to find a replacement. Scott Hendryx in Boise makes a great kydex/cordura custom sheath but I will give those mentioned here a price check before I buy.

Thanks,

Bruce

Robert,

I've been looking to pick one of these up for several months now, but nobody has them in stock. Any idea where I might get one for a 7.5" blade?

S.

Looks like a nce sheath and they say they have it in stock. They're made here in the states?

I don't find the quality to be bad on the Blackhawk. I'd change the pouch, but that's me.

Thanks all. If you look at:

www.geocities.com/mrostov/gearpages/hendryx_sheath.htm

you can see a Scott Hendryx sheath. The one on the left has a pocket attached also. A sheath for <8" blade is $38, $43 for 8" and over. Scott custom makes these and I had one made for a Mad Dog ATAK Hunter I sent with a Special Forces Captain I know, to Iraq. He really likes it. Scott works in production for Milt Sparks, the holster company.

Either way, it just about doubles the cost of the knife. I think I only paid $10 for it in 1967. I think they are about $28 now.

Oh Yes,I've only heard wonderful things about Scott Hendryx sheaths.Definatly worth the reasonable asking price.I was going to order one for my Chris Reeve one piece, but couldn't bring myself to send it in for a fitting, being without my knife for a couple weeks, couldn't bear it.I had a Spec-OPS sheath from Brigade, and was very impressed to say the least. Some like Blackhawk and some don't,some bad feedback from users, some good. The sheaths I've had in the past ranged from crappy to pretty good from that company over the years.I'll tell you one thing,The Green Beret knife from CRK fit better in the Spec-OPS than the "factory" Blackhawk sheath supplied with the knife.Hopefully,QC at Blackhawk is on a upswing, but personally I would rather spend my dollars in the USA.I wouldn't go dumping your Blackhawk sheath though,I'm sure you will find it is serviceable, but keep Spec-OPS gear in mind for future gear needs,It's a really great company and great gear.

Yeah, I try and buy USA made products when I can, but, it's getting to the point that being made in the USA don't necessarily mean that it's actually made by an American. But that's another rant for another place.

I'll keep the Spec-ops sheath in mind definitely if I happen across another good blade. You know, like I find a CRK at a yard sale for 20.00 or so.:D For the USAF PSK, the blackhawk is fine. They fit very well.

Sad to say,but your probably right.Another sad fact is made in America can mean made 50% in another Country with Foreign materials.Made in the USA now a days don't always mean made 100% in the USA.Good point.

Anytime someone tries to sell you something based upon an emotional trait that does nothing for the function of the object, red flags should go up. I think that the first and foremost thing to look for is quality and reliability. The second should be a cost-efficiency that allows you to acquire other material or equipment necessities. Somewhere further down the line should be consideration for where things are made.

Now, there are times where "made in the USA" is synonymous with quality and reliability, ie. Medical care and medications or Technology, but within reason, we know that this is not always the case. Take the best tools for the best price, irrespective of where it comes from.
