I have been wanting one of these for a while. Can anyone tell me how comfortable the knife is to use in a camping/survial situation. I know the A2 steel is tough and keeps a great edge (I love A2 in a fixed blade). I do not have a shop in my area where I can handle the knife before I buy, so I look to you guys that may have used or own this knife. BTW pics are welcome :D .

Thanks,
John

I own a few randall model 14's, which are basically the same knife with the difference being the Blackjack has a flat grind, vs. the Randall's hollow grind.

They work ok, the clip point is a bad feature for battoning wood for notching or splitting. That model has handle rivets so the problem with the randall handle coming loose when used to chop stuff isn't present on the blackjack I imagine.

Its a good style knife IMO and I was happy to use it in that role, but for camping there are "better" styled knives. I can say this honestly because that is the manner in which i used my #14 for quite some time.

If you like that style knife, I would highly recommend you concider ordering a Randall model 14, with a CDT.

Try to handle the model before you buy, as the finger cutouts on the grip are situated quite wide apart so they will only fit larger hands well.
I could not get a good grip on it so i sold the knife to a guy with very big hands, :D
The knife itself is very well made though, as is any Blackjack knife (they are made by Mike Stewart from BRKT)
BTW, it has a convex grind, not a flat grind.
There is also a model with a "border patrol" type handle without cutouts, but i never owned that version myself.

This was mine:

I use my HALO Attiack with Border Patrol handle and single quillian guard in that very role.

I find it to be a very effective field tool.

Thank you guys very much for the input and the pics..

Big Mike, did you just cut off part of the guard or did it come that way? I really like the looks of it better.

I am finding it hard to not just pull the trigger and getting it over with.

Thanks,
John

Big Mike, that is gorgeous! Too bad I can't find one anywhere with a single guard. :(

ooops, I meant to type i can't speak for big mike, that is why i had the but in there. Sorry about that.

I did that mod myself, :D  :D

...but it was so popular that BRK made 20 that way in the most recent run.

I've been looking all over for one of those single guard HALOs, do you know of a site or store that is selling them?

Also, what exactly did you have to do to chop that top guard off and polish it back up? I might have to go that route but I don't know where to start!

Love Black Jack knives. Convexed A2, incredible factory edges. I guess it's time for a new Halo.
