I recently picked up a Trailguide myself--fit and finish were superb, very even grinds, and it came (of course) extremely sharp. These are a serious jump, in my opinion, over the old Effingham versions and easily worth the money. I know some don't like some of the changes that have been made, but to me they're mostly an improvement, especially the slightly larger handles. I am not saying looks mean nothing to me, but having the knife be comfortable in my hand means a whole lot more. I always thought the original's handles were too small, so I guess I'm biased.
I think their lack of presence on the forums isn't really an issue of popularity, so much as just that they are pretty much producing familiar patterns out of familiar materials. They're doing it very well, in my opinion, but it doesn't make for much "what's new?" type of discussion for the knife forums. I think you'll be very happy with it when it arrives.
