Blackjack Knives?

Thinking about a Blackjack Model 14 in A2. I’ve thought about other Bowie type knives such as the Tops PWB and Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works. While those knives are nice, they’re not exactly what I’m looking for. I’m terms of aesthetics, the 14 is what I’m looking for. Not familiar with A2 steel, I do not know much of anything about it. Would the 14 be considered a hard use knife? Tough knives are a big prerequisite for me. Would love to hear from owners and users, past and present. Thanks, Damien.

A2 is hella tough, I have a tomahawk from blackjack in A2 that I got like 6 years ago. Good heat treat. I think bark river made/makes there stuff.

I've had a bunch of a2 from other makers as well, it's tougher than 1095, I think it's better than 1095 in every way actually. Gets stupid sharp, slightly better corrosion resistance (but still patinas) and it's tougher.

I don't have that model, but I do have a Model 125 and a 1-7, both in A2. The 1-7 has been used but mostly just light stuff like making dinner and occasional camping. The 125 has been my main hunting knife for years and years. It has been used hard and hasn't let me down yet. The only time I have had a problem is when I was butchering a turkey one year and tried to smash it through a leg bone (I knew it was stupid but I did it anyway lol) and it got a pretty bad nick in the edge that I sharpened out later.
They do not rust, they stay sharp, they are tough, they work for me. I have other a2 knives from Bark River (they make Blackjacks) and they have all been just as great.

Not sure what "hard use" entails though?

I've used one of mine to chop down and up into pieces sugar cane, and its pretty hard stuff. it did fine with that. no chipping or rolling. edge stayed sharp even after stripping the bark/skin off it. also have used it to chop on some water oak. held up fine to that too..although my halos are more fighting knives styled, than bush tasked knives......

The knife Charlie Mike made for me is A2 and while he was still around I wasn't worried about it breaking. I beat that sucker HARD. I found knotty oak and proceeded to relentlessly beat it through it. Now it lives a simply easy life.

He sure would. Dude took a Dremel or engraver to his Rolex to drive home the point of no safe queens. 🤣

Sorry Matt, you're not around to fix my knife stupidity and I want to keep this thing for the remainder of my days and then give to my sons.

Sorry for the derail coolbreezy37 coolbreezy37 Matt made our knives in A2 which is how we got on to this topic.

Well I ended up getting the Blackjack. It’s a great looking knife, but I have no experience with Blackjack or Bark River knives. I got it for $243 NIB after taxes. Love the look of the handle and Randall-esque looks. Looks like the perfect combo of a traditional Bowie and a combat knife. Now to play the 4-8 business day waiting game.
I have that version but in black micarta. also the finger groove model. not as good as randalls, but still a decent user. I like the sheath it comes with.

I would love to add a Randall to my collection, but a similar Randall knife is 4x the price. That’s out of my reach for the time being.
