im ready to buy a good woods knife with a blade 5'' to 6''.i really like the looks of the blackjack model 5 but i am also looking at a similar knife from fallkniven from there northern lights series. which knife would be the better choice,ie durability, edge retention. I know that 1095 is an extremly tough steel but i dont know anything about vg10. which knife would be tougher and is the fallkniven worth the extra money? thanks

If the knife is going to be a user, then don't buy the Blackjack model 5, and don't buy the Fällkniven Northern Lights knives either, unless you just really want that leather-handled look and extremely awkward double guard. I have the Northern Lights series knives, and while they are well made, they do not perform any better than the cheaper Fällknivens. In fact, the larger Northern Lights models perform worse than the cheaper Fällknivens, because they have those huge double guards that do nothing except get in the way of work. Get a Fällkniven A1. It's much cheaper than the NL 3 and much more usable since it doesn't have that awful double finger guard. And the Northern Lights series has leather handles that - while good-looking - perform much worse in terms of grip and moisture resistance than the rubber handles of the A1. Fällknivens are all well made knives that will perform. But the Northern Lights series is more for show than go. The A1 isn't as pretty and the fit and finish isn't as good, but it'll serve better in actual use. Just my opinion, of course.

As for the steel, the laminated VG-10 Fällkniven uses is good stuff. Holds an edge well, is very easy to sharpen, and with the thickness of Fällkniven blades, they are very durable.

Hello

Yoz..

I also agree with the Ai or A2 if you want a bigger blade..
Nothing against blackjack,, however not in the same league as a Fallkniven...

They are for sure worth the extra $$$..
