I am looking for a large hard use outdoor knife and was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Blackjack knives. I have been considering the panga but I am unfamiliar with what effect the cryogenic conditioning is suppoesed to have on the steel. Do the Blackjack knive hold an edge and what type of quality can I expect?

thanks for your help.

I have a Blackjack Panga and while it is a nice machete type blade, I would not call it hard use. Mine has 3.5mm thick spine and full height flat ground blade which makes for a great slicer but doesn't leave a whole lot of steel behind the edge. The thickness also tapers toward the tip quite a bit leaving the tip too fragile IMO.

I consider mine more of a short sword to have fun with on soft/semi-soft targets. Small branches would be about the roughest thing I would cut with it.

You would be better off with a $20 Ontario 12" machete for hard use. I bought one and re-handled it with micarta slabs and now its my beater large fixed blade.
