Thinking about buying Blackjack randall mod 1 in 1095 , what are your experiences ot opinions on this knife, I plan to use it for hunting, camping and food preparation.
Are you talking about an older (1990's) Effingham production knife, or a new one? The older versions were very well made, with the exception of the lack of hilt solder, which may let in the elements, crud, etc. I have no experience with the new BJK line - or even know if a Model #1 variant is currently being produced...
Checkoutthe knife reviews in one of the last issues of Knife World (Jan or Feb issue I think), he covered the new Blackjack line, the Trailguide, model 7 and model 5. Overall very favorable, esp. the Trailguide.
I had a buddy that had one of the original Blackjack 1-7s which was just about a dead ringer for my Randall 1-7. He managed to chip the blade somehow and left the knife in it's leather sheath over a long time and got deep corrosion pitting on the knife because of it. Eventually he gave it away.
The Randall 1-7 and it's copies was a great knife in it's time and is still a good knife for it's intended purpose but it really isn't a good camping, woods, hunting, food prep knife. There are much better for less money. Still and all, it's a damned fine design and a hell of a pretty knife to own and hold. If you absolutely insist on it, be careful of that sharpened false edge while you're slicing your taters.
