Can't afford a Randall right now.

Thinking about a Blackjack 1-7

2 Questions

Anybody have one that can attest to the quality?

I am leaning towards Black Micarta, but could be persuaded to leather.

Feedback welcome.

Blackjack (Mike Stewart) makes good stuff. You won't be dissapointed. Use it for what its designed for and don't worry :)

blackjack is good looking & excellent in edge holding.my brother has been familiar with randalls since late 50s.told me yrsterday that preferred customer consumers were on 5 months waiting.these are the guys that order special addons etc. 100 to 200 at a time.
regular cust. probably 5 yrs.
randalls come into market often due to death, divorce, inheritance,& people whom buy large collections.in certain parts of world demand is so strong that a 400$ knife sells for 900$. glad i do'nt collect them .need lots of patience & money

If you're going to use it I prefer micarta.
Also consider the Bark River Smoke Jumper.
It's light for a knife of it's size and I like the handle better than the 1-7.
Overall Length: 11.2 Inches
Blade Length: 6.2 Inches
Blade Steel: 50-100B @ 58rc
Blade Thickness:.175 Inch
Weight: 8 Ounces

It's gonna be a "user" and I am not going to pay $900 for a Randall or wait years to get one.

While I understand the collector value of a Randall, I am also practical (and impatient)

The price of the Randall will be much more, but I am not convinced it will cut all that much better.

I'll leave the Randalls to the "collectors" and will sleep just fine.

I will give you a free chopper lopper blade from Jeff Crowner knives...I want you to have it...Jeff

I want you to have it for free and test the crap out of it and then sing about it...OK, I might get in trouble here from the grand poo ba powers to be, just give me a quarter ($.25 cents for it)! I have an extra one here just laying around...Its got your name on it........Thank you for the kind words and truth about previous comments on the quality of my blades with thier performance...As for Black Jack Blades they are very nice choppers...Two of my friends Wayne Goddard and David Ryder both have one...I have gotten to chop with one of them and like them....They really are a great factory made with custom performance....J

Neigther of which are requisite to aquiring a Randall knife in all cases, you have overstated the sometimes lengthy process of buying a randall knife. however your personal choice to not buy one is very valid.

I do like the fact that blackjack still uses the pins in the handle on the model 14, whilst randall has decided a friction fit with one single tube is strong enough for their model 14, use has shown me this is not very strong and after a few years i ended up having to tap my handle back in place sometimes. I like the convex grind of the blackjack. I also think that the 1-7 has a significantly smaller tang than any comparable randall knife.

My response was meant as a response to Dennis Stricklands post just before mine. It was meant to address the specifics in that post only and not as a general statement about Randall knives.

My understanding is that there is a long wait (at least months) and they cost a fair bit of money. Neither of those do I have, but that doesn't mean a Randall is not worth the wait OR the money.

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Blackjack knives. I could, however, say more than a few unkind things about Mike Stewart. I'll just leave it at that.

Great knives made by a great guy. Mike Stewart is stand up as far as I am concerned and Blackjack Blades are real keepers & sleepers, IMO.
