After another cracked blade, a heartbreaking one at that, I made this to change gears and try something new. Since I've never done any real blacksmithing and I've always liked this style of knife so I thought I'd try one to practice some hammering. I learned quite a bit and will definitely try again. It's a different approach to hammer a knife to shape knowing you can't fix up the profile with the grinder (except on the edge side.)

I really like how this feels.

3 1/2" W2 steel blade. 7 3/8" OAL.

I've seen a lot of those kinds of knives Stuart... but not many with such a nice hamon and sheath!

That's a beauty, Stuart!
You are now an official Blade/Blacksmith - with a knife to prove it.
Nice hamon, as well.

SBK on the stock exchange: If you were going for an IPO, I'd invest a fortune. :D

Rarely seen such nice styling. Cool!

Ive seen lots of these knives but somethign about the hamon and even the handle shape just seems to speak to me! Looks super somfortable despite the rough overall look.

That's one of the nicest blacksmith knives I've seen! My first "real" knife had that kind of handle with a twisted copper wrap (which looked good but made it heavy and threw off the balance) and a foot-long blade.

When you're as good at handskills as you are, you can make artistry out of simple tools.

I don't understand your comment about not being able to clean up the profile, though. That's most of the grinding I do on my forge finished blades. Did you not grind the spine to get the profile finalized?

Thanks very much guys...

@ Crow.. I wanted to keep the hammer shaped look so I did not grind the spine or the handle except for a small bit right where the blade meets the guard. I tried to hammer in all the curves in the profile. That made it a little more challenging.

Very nice Stuart I like the shape and Love that it has a killer hamon. To have some fun with that same design you can try trapping a piece of wood or copper in the tear drop shape .

your knife has fantastic lines my friend.

Stuart,

That's a sweet one, and the curve you've forged into the handle is very nice, especially at the guard turn-back.

I really like how the tail wraps around to become the guard. Very practical and effective! Nice knife Stuart...

Now THAT looks like a blacksmith knife done right..!
