Blacksmiths guide to using junk yard steels

Good info Dan,reinforces the rule 'don't assume ,test first'. Timken ,I know , has been involved for some years in tailoring alloys for customers. Instead of a customer buying a specific AISI grade of steel they work with Timken to formulate a steel .They look at the final properties required and try to formulate one that minimizes costs. Costs of heat treating can be high so if that can be minimized or eliminated that's better.
