A month ago I got a Blackthorn Staff.

I works well as a walking stick and I purchased a rubber tip for a cane at Walmart so I wouldn't scuff the tip when using it.

Everyone who sees it mentions Gandalf and no one seems to see it as a weapon.

My question is how is it supposed to be used as a weapon?

The protrusions get in the way for using it as a bo, jo, or hanbo, or even as a thrusting weapon.

Using the grip in either a one or two handed grip doesn't really give it good balance.

It is not a big deal since I actually bought is for use as a hiking staff but I was just wondering how one is supposed to fight with one.

I also got the octagonal staff and it works well with Japanese bojutsu/hanbojutsu/jojutsu techniques.

They should make them in 6' for a good bo since wooden weapons are becoming harder to find in good quality.

A few years ago I got a Cold Steel Shillelagh. I noticed protrusions would be a problem in handling it. I cut them off and sanded them down. It took a little while, but turned out really nice. After showing it to my son who also has one, he did the same thing and is pleased with how it turned out. I used a hacksaw to cut them off.
