This piece of African Blackwood was black as a piece of coal when I started, but what I found inside was quite a variation of color. Gives this Take-down Hunter quite a bit of character.
Headed for Montana to chase Elk.
Forged down from heavy 5160 square stock and selectively hardened.
Stainless guard and Take-down hardware.
(Now, back to getting ready for the Ohio Show.)

No doubt it will prove a valuable companion to the fortunate new owner. Nice work.

THAT is a gorgeous knife!! I am sure that it WILL serve the new owner quite well!!!

Very nice blade Karl !! I love your take-down model

In regards to the Blackwood. I just picked up my first Blackwood bowie block from Alpha. Like the handle on your take-down it has some brown in it. What, in your opinion, is the preferred color ? Pitch black ? Or...... Blackwood with some hints of brown in it ? What do you look for in a piece of African Blackwood Karl ?

Thanks for the pics  As always ........... PERFECT !! ;)

The thing to keep in mind is that Blackwood is NOT completely black. Blackwood has inherent brown and dark brown streaks through it.
My surprise on this one is that the exterior was VERY black! This much mottled brown inside was a surprise!
I buy very few handle sized blocks. I look for large turning blocks and then cut and dry my own stuff. This piece here was up in my garage ceiling for a year after it was cut to 2X2X6.
With blackwood, just look to be sure it doesn't have any of the whiter sap wood.
