Here's the first wood handled knife I've done in months. African blackwood handle with wrought iron fittings. The blade is 8 3/8" with an overall measurement of 13 3/8". This is an order of a knife I did 3 years ago. The customer wanted it exact. Pretty tuff to do with just a picture and measurements. Never been one to make patterns but as far as I can tell its pretty close. Here's a look at the one I was trying to copy: http://www.bladegallery.com/shopexd.asp?id=2785&websess=21380417169072 Hope the customer isn't into temperlines. I've been using Texaco Type A quenching oil and certain steels I just can't get temperlines to show up. I'm not even sure if I'd gone with 1065 how it would turn out.

nice work! The only real difference I notice is that the ferrule/spacer just behind the guard on yours is a bit wider than the original exhibit.

I hope someday I can do work half as nice.

Sweet.
Are the spacers also blackwood?

Actually what looks like spacers is just file work on a single piece of wrought iron. If I could ever come up with a decent picture you'd be able to tell.

Raymond: Could you explain how you make the pommel and the threaded nut holding it all together? Do you turn it on the lathe? Threaded or peined? If hand shaped...how? Is the grooving..for lack of a better word...done with a file? Is the ring solid or welded shut? Thanks very much

Awsome! I like everything about it, looks pretty darn close too, I bet it just floots in the hand.

Nice work!

I like it, Ray. I've actually working on a piece handled in blackwood right now also. I really like your treatment of the guard this time.
