I'm looking for a blade of around 10-12 inches including the handle to be strapped to my thigh for easy carrying when i'm out in the woods ect, i was wondering if anyone had any advice on what type/brand to pick? previous to this i used my kabar but something a little longer would be nice. i was considering the tanto style knives that i found at a gun show with an 8" blade but ended up not buying it because of poor quality. i'm looking for something that still maintains a slim blade but is just a little longer. thanks in advance

Check out Scrap Yard Knives Sykco 711 or 911. 711 being 7 inch blade 911 being 9 inch blade. Look at Knife Tests Noss (on youtube) for the Scrap Yard Scrapper 6 for proof of what ridiculous things these knives can go through.

The Becker BK7 is 12-3/4" overall with a 7" blade. The BK9 is a bit longer, 14-3/4" overall with a 9" blade. Becker knives are good quality, made by Ka-Bar who you're already familiar with. And they're very popular so there are many options as far as custom sheath systems if the stock sheath doesn't suit you.

For something more 'rustic' or traditional styled, check out some of the large chopper-style knives from the Scandinavian brands. Strömeng for example, or one of the longer models from Ahti or Järvenpää.

The ESEE 6 is 11-3/4" overall, and their Junglass is 16-1/2" overall. Check out the full specs, sheath options, and photos at their website.

The Buck 120 (General) is 11-3/4" overall (discontinued but easy to find). Anza, Condor, and Old Hickory (make your own sheath) are also worth checking out.

That'll keep you busy for a while. ;)

Ditch a tanto, at least the American version. If you're dead set on 10-12 inches, i'd go with a Becker BK16. Really nice sheath also.

Get a custom. It will be exactly what you want and you wont have closets full of knives that are OK but just dont do it for you. For heavy abuse, get something made of CPM-3V or 4V. In the hands of a master knife maker (many of which post here) this steel will give you a knife that would will laugh in your face as you try to break it and hold and edge longer than D2, which aint too shabby.

What you want is a BK&T BK-9. Outstanding knife. Chops better than you think it would. You can go custom sheath or you can just customize your stock sheath, your choice. What your goal is, is a drop leg swivel set up with leg strap. Elastic leg strap is better.

My custom bk-9 rig.

I do this with most of my knives. It makes it SOOOO easy to carry this way. You can work all day long, it moves with you. You can bend, squat, work, get into/out of vehicles, atv's, horses, etc....

I use 3/16" steel rod from the hardware store & make my own custom fit D-rings, then use belt keepers to attach to my belt. Easy peasy.
