when sharpening your knives how do you know what degree is your blade angle?
in general, what degree does benchmade knives use?:)

On my worksharp I just try to match the angle the knife is usually at using the 20 degree guide, but I freehand it. As for Benchmade, I believe they use 25-30 degrees per side, which is too obtuse for us knife guys.

You can use a Catra laser protractor to measure the edge angle precisely. Otherwise, you can use a sharpening system with set angles, such as the Sharpmaker, EdgePro or Wicked Edge in a trial and error to find the angle at which the stone is parallel to the edge, usually with the help of a Sharpie and/or Loupe.

I reprofile all my edges to 30 degrees inclusive -- 15 degrees per side. It's a good angle for good steels, and it matches the Sharpmaker's pre-set angle, which I use for quick touch-ups.

Benchmade, as Noctis says, usually has less acute angles.

Factory knives are often uneven, with the grind on one side being steeper than the grind on the other side. Reprofiling cleans that up. I use the Wicked Edge for reprofiling and major sharpenings.

i don't know what degree benchmade uses.

i free-hand sharpen and my hands are pretty accurate. i have a cheap protractor that i mod'ed and i can tape to my stones (just to check). im always pretty close to my target.

i keep my EDC blades around 18-20 degrees per side.

Most knife manufacturers set their factory edge at about 22.5 degrees per side, but I find 15 per side gives better performance without risking chipping. And with Benchmade's factory edge, you never know what the angle really is or was supposed to be...

thanks for the advice guys. i'm getting a sharpmaker so i guess i'll be using the 30 degree setting.
