Blade askew from handle

I didn't want to hijack rprocter's thread with this question...

I recently purchase a small hunter by a well know maker on the exchange ($400) and I notice that as looking down the knife along the spine that the blade is not in line with the handle. It is a mortised handle and I can only guess that either the hole was drilled off center, there was significant play in the fit and it cured off center, or the final shaping of the handle was to blame. (I'm not entirely sure the of process)

I corresponded with the original owner (not the seller in this case) and he confirmed that he received it that way and that he has seen this before even in a MS piece.

Is this part of the territory or should this be mentioned in a for sale thread?

I might not have bought the knife had I known this as I am very particular with these kind of details. As a woodworker I am very hard on myself if I make these kinds of mistakes so I am surprised to see such a nice knife released to the public with this kind of mistake.

I though it may be ramhorn as the odd shapes tend to be hard to align perfectly at times.

Can you return the knife? If in fact it's that serious a condition.

Well the original owner was aware, so he should have communicated it to the seller and thus the seller to you.

IMO, the buyer should be guaranteed satisfaction regardless of defect or degree of defect. Just not liking the piece is a legitimate reason for return.

The maker is not making knives any more so a return is not possible.
I mostly wondered if it's common enough that it's not generally mentioned or if it really is an issue for the value. I'll leave things as they are as I am planning to keep the knife. Still, that little detail is going to bother me unless I can convince myself that it's part of the knife's character. ha.
Thanks

Or was it made specifically for right or left hand carry?:D I gotta use that one some time...lol.

Good one, Joe!
He probably got the mortise too deep, one way or the other, and when getting hard, the handle shifted all the way to one side.
It's an easy error to make, but the bottom line is satisfaction.

That I agree with. No knife is perfect. But if the build quality on this one is not up to your standards, you should return it to the seller. Most reasonable sellers will offer a return period of a few days after purchase.

That would drive me nuts. The first thing I look for when I get a knife is how well everything lines up from tip to butt along the spine, and along the edge. Off set handles and warped blades are not acceptable to me. If it were me, I would be sending the knife back to the seller and getting a refund.

v. interesting to learn that "Just not liking the piece is a legitimate reason for return". i appreciate the mentoring experienced collectors provide. roland

But shipping both ways would be the responsibility of the buyer. It's unreasonable to expect the seller to cover the shipping costs if the buyer Just Doesn't Like It. Larry

IMHO if a knife is received and is "as described" and one decides that they have second thoughts-buyer's remorse than the honorable thing to do when returning the knife is to reimburse the seller for the original cost of shipping the
the knife to you.

The key words here are "as described."

for 400$ you should be entitlted to a knife that is aligned pretty damn straight. It's pretty much the first thing to learn about knife assembly.
