Hi y'all, bit of a knife newbie here. I acquired a DLT-exclusive Spyderco Manix 2 in DLC-coated Cru-Wear. The first time I went to clean sticky residue off the blade (with a Zep degreaser), I messed up the coating. Didn't completely strip it but discolored it. Not a big deal but since I don't want a repeat on an equally/more expensive knife, I'd like to know what cleaner(s) is/are safe to be used on coated blades - namely cerakote and DLC. Thanks in advance!

Goo Gone on a paper towel is excellent for box tape adhesive.
Next is EDCi, apply and wipe away with dry microfiber cloth,,,,, this leaves a thin hard coating that is easy to wipe clean. Excellent protection for the new tool steels that are not stainless.

Clean the blade with soap and water. Rubbing Alcohol can work for some sticky substances. Goof Off (acetone) for really stubborn stuff. Yes, all of this will discolor the DLC (makes it more grey than black). After cleaning, use mineral oil on the DLC. According to Sal and Spyderco, DLC coating does not increase corrosion resistance. However, if you look at it under a microscope (there are pictures out there) it looks like a very interrupted finish. Oil it, and you'll bring back the black color, and up the corrosion resistance because the DLC will trap (or absorb) the oil. You just need a light coating.

Been doing this with all my DLC blades. Works great.

In my experience, alcohol doesn't always work so well. The one thing that seems to work well for me is eucalyptus oil, and I seem to remember reading somewhere any similar essential oil will do the trick. I don't think it will harm a DLC coating, but I'm only guessing.

I think even WD40 or similar, people have said works for this.
