Blade closing unevenly

I have a brand new griptilian 551s and when I close it, it goes primarily to one side. So the gap has more space on one side then the other. Sometimes the blade shaves the side if I'm closing with my thumb only on one side. Is this normal? I wouldn't think so because it will eventually dull the blade if it keeps on moving over. How do I fix it?

not normal.. if it was me - i'd take it apart and attempt to fix on my won - but you should probably send it to BM and they will make it right... send them an email with your issue.

dumb question, you check the pivot screw? i'm with sting7777, i'd take that sucker apart! and fix that thing.

on every benchmade I've owned blade centering was dependant entirely on proper tightening of all the screws, especially the backspacer and pivot.

Get yourself to Home Depot and go to the little section where they have screwdrivers and bits. Look for a mini-Husky torx set. Looks like a mini screwdriver and comes with a few torx bits in the handle; they normally have them near the register or by the other screwdrivers :)

yoda4561, got the same problem on my BM 558. Never made these adjustments so could you explain how you would go about it?

For the Benchmades I've owned with this problem, I had success with this method: loosen all the screws (complete disassembly isn't necessary, and with screws that small, why tempt fate?) and see how the blade falls between the liners. Use hand pressure to hold the knife together in a manner that causes the blade to center itself between the liners. Sometimes this involves pushing one liner/scale assembly "up" relative to the opposite liner/scale set. Still holding everything together with hand pressure, tighten the screws down, but be careful because you can pretty easily strip the threads on the backspacer screws. When you're done, you should have a knife that's better aligned than before. I have to mention, however, that newer Benchmades tend to be less sensitive to this sort of work - the components drop into place no matter how you screw with the component alignments. Then again, I haven't seen a newer Benchmade that needed this sort of adjustment.

PS - make sure that the blade itself isn't crooked. Take it out and sandwich it between two pieces of plate glass or something similar. You'll have to remove the thumbstuds, of course.

Back out all the screws a little, then starting from the rear of the handle using your fingertips to turn the driver tighten all the screws until they're good and snug. You want them to be tight, but not so tight that you'd need to exert real effort into removing them. Then on the pivot, tighten it down until the blade is all but impossible to open one handed, it should be centered now. Finally back out the pivot screw in small increments, until you reach the balance of blade play and ease of opening you want.
