Do all blade coatings like Ti Nitride, Teflon, etc. eventually wear off? I 'm asking 'cause there are several knives I'm looking at with coated blades, but I don't want to have a bunch of scratched blades after a time. Any recommendations for coated blades are appreciated. TIA.

Yep, they will all eventually scratch/wear off.
A crinkle coat (like the one Busse and Swamp Rat use) is probably the best option because it smoothes out before bare metal is exposed. Due to its slightly rough surface, it also hides scratches better than other coatings.

Please don't get me wrong because I am not at all trying to be argumentative but there is one type of blade coating that I heard does do much better than most. There is a company called BODYCOTE who uses "Boron Carbide" coatings. I have heard that the Boron Carbide definitely fuses itself to the metal and literally becomes part of it. The 2 people I know that own blades with that particular coating have told me some pretty astounding testimonies.

I would appreciate someone elses first hand feedback on that type of coating. JD

Hey Guys..

Yaa all blade coatings wear off ,,except for bodycote..That's awesome stuff...

I've had very good luck with the smooth blade coating that Busse use to put on their basic series...

Busse crinkle coat finish is pretty good as well, however I have seen some of it chip and peel off..For the most part a tough finish for sure..

No matter what it is ,short of bodycote,,all finishes will wear off...

You can always try bedliner spray. Anywhere from 5 to 10 bucks a can so if it get's scratched or messed up repair is a quick spray away.:D

Many people who like blued handguns like them because when they begin to wear away in spots, they like the "look." I bought a used CS Night Force and wondered how easy it was to remove the black coating, but the answer is apparently: Not easy. But it's not ugly, just a little worn looking. Still has a wickedly sharp blade, though.

The black may be worn, but there will be enough of it left to keep it discreet looking. And there's only stainless steel underneath, so it's okay.

DLC - Diamond-Like Coating is supposed to be the toughest around with a RC of 90. It is supposed to be the newest toughest coating around, but I have read a few complaints, but I believe it to be the toughest so far.

darrel at bodycote did 2 of my knives w/the boron DLC and yes they will still scuff, like all the coatings supposedly it still protects the blade afterwards, but it will scratch/scuff up.

I understand that stainless watches have what is called PVD finish which is also black. It is supposed to be absorbed by the metal and not wear off. ??

If you like black blades, then according to some ancient philosophical texts you're ethically obligated to like a black blade with some character. :D
The first scratch may scare you, but don't worry. Soon they all add up to a greater whole. They become a chronicle of your knife's life story; they show that you actually use your knife.

Just FYI, but most of the harder coatings, like TiNi, Boron Carbide, DLC, etc. will not really wear off, rather scuff. The hardness tends to abrade other materials, and then you have a 'chalk mark' from the softer material on your very hard blade coating. This can usually be removed with a good scrubbing with a green scrub pad. I prefer this type of coating to the Teflon/bed-liner/crinkle coatings that are sprayed on. Ideally, a mirror polished blade which is then DLC'ed would be my choice.

Where would someone go to get Crinkle Coat? I've not been able to find a reference to it outside of Swamp Rat...

Hey hp..

Look for someone in your area that does powder coating...

Anyone who does powder should be able to get that same type of finish,, or close to it...

You could just remove it and not have to worry about it. I removed the black coat from a Ranger RD7 myself and I like it even better now. It cuts much smoother and there's no hang up about getting the finished all messed up. Be prepared to do some polishing.

It sounds like you are going to use the blade? If so, scratches happen unless you want a safe queen.

I like the look of your Ranger stripped of coating.

darrel at bodycote did 2 of my knives w/the boron DLC and yes they will still scuff, like all the coatings supposedly it still protects the blade afterwards, but it will scratch/scuff up.

I assume you have to send a (uncoated) blade to bodycote for the work? Any DIY stuff that works?
