I have a Benchmade 970 (emerson cqc7) and it is in great shape but the blade coating is scratched and make the knife look like junk. Any ideas on how to resolve the problem? Does anybody recoat these? Have the finish removed? Thanks for the help.

Which is why I generally avoid coated blades. ;)

I know there have been a few thread on the forum about people who stripped the coating off of various knives using either abrasives and paint stripping chemicals. I guess it depens on what the coating is?

Yeah, they say the same thing for holster wear on guns. If you buy stainless steel firearms,
you can just work the nicks out and refinish it. As for knives, you can use polishing pads of
various grits and use increasingly fine ones till the blades shine. Then you can use polishing
paste like Flitz or Semichrome to polish the blade.

I don't much care for wear on my working knives, but I do care for my collection knives.

If you go to HOME DEPOT, you can get some Norton pads that replace steel wool. They're made
of synthetic material and won't embed carbon steel into your blade to rust later. The pads come
in varying surfaces. "000" is "extra fine" and will put the finishing touches on, just before using
the polishing gunk. The premium polishing paste shown below can be had at Smokey Mountain
Knife Works for $2.99
. That will make the blade shine.

The Norton pads come in various colors/grades. Start out tough
and then work your way to "Extra Fine"—then polish with Semichrome,
Flitz, or the glunk below.

Thanks guys, especially Confederate. I never buy coated knives but a BM970 for $40 and I had to get it. Thanks a lot.
