I got a Basic #9 with black coated blade. Is there a way to remove this coating without sanding or buffing.
I could get it off by sanding but I don't want to mess up the nice factory edge profile.Buffing could also effect the edge. Thanks

From what I know, you can remove most blade coatings with 3M's synthetic steel wool. No matter what you use you will have to resharpen the edge and you will invariably affect the edge while removing the coating. Keep in mind, by removing the coating you are seriously impairing the corrosion resistance of the blade-use Tuff Cloth. Hope this helps.

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

From what I hear you may not want to remove the coating because it has a rough surface underneath the coating. I have no experience with this though. My basic has a few exposed areas where I can see the blade and it doesnt look too rough. Also the INFI steel is supposed to be pretty rust resistant so you shouldn't have to worry too much about that. Tuff Cloth should be fine. If you do remove the coating let us know how it turns out. Use a straight edge knife with softer steel then the Basic. With this you can easily scrape the epoxy off. That's what I did with my Steel Heart. The surface on those is not too smooth though, but the Basics might be different.

Yes, David had explained that in order for the coat to adhere properly, the texture of the blades original surface need to be a bit on the rough side. Not big holes mind you but rather a sort of very corse rough blast. The surface would definitely need to be smoothed out and polished.

I considered doing this on my Basic #7. A word of caution: I have just finished polishing a formerly bead-blasted blade to a satin finish. It took a LONG time, and it was very difficult getting it polished next to the scales, which I did not remove. It took probably close to 25 hours total, starting with 400 grit paper, going up to 1200 grit, then finishing with a polishing cloth loaded with jewelers rouge. I still have no feeling in my fingers. Mind you, this was a very small fixed blade, with a 4.5 inch blade of ATS-34. Doing this knife made me like the black finish on my Basic. I'm leaving it alone.
