What would be a good durable coating for a blade ?
Are the spray type enamel paints any good?
I have also seen previous threads about mixing paint with epoxy...any experiences?

I would agree with scottang1. A black oxide coating will be more durable than paint. Caswell's makes separate kits for stainless steel and carbon steel. Make sure you order the right formula for the steel you have.

I would not mix paint with epoxy. The results would be uneven at best. And the result would not be as durable as a true epoxy paint. If you want to use paint, you could try a marine two-part epoxy paint. It would be tougher than any regular paint, but not as good as the black oxide coatinng.

add:
oh, and nix on the spray paint. bad ju ju. No good.

Oxidizing or plating are the only things that you can do that will stay on the blade.
