Question out to the group... the black coating on the RAT/ESEE blades..what is it and can it be purchased to apply on to the knife without a bunch of difficulty? I wanted to black over the logos and lettering on my H.E.S.T because this (albeit the blade edge) is the only part of the knife uncoated.

Thoughts?

Much Thanks.

The simplest way to subdue the graphics is to cold blue them. It works well, I've done it in the past. If you try to do it with paint it will look...crappy.
If you use the HEST for food prep I would avoid the cold blue however because it's toxic.

Yes, it's a baked on epoxy powdercoat. It would be possible to do it yourself but pretty labor intensive.

gotcha...thanks for the info. seems as though i should just take a bit of oil to it and clean it every so often to prevent any rust.

Much appreciated.

try carnuba wax, or the gunstock wax that Birchwood Casey makes. I have recently discovered it as a superb metal conditioner for coating carbon blades.

what is "cold blue"?

There are multiple types of iron oxides (Fe2O3, Fe3O4...). With "cold blue", you impose a stable one to form (blue/black oxide), therefore blocking others (red rust).

Most place that sell guns keep product for cold blueing.
