Blade Coatings?

I know this is a question that has went round and round before, but thought I'd ask anyway, maybe some new info has come up.

I was checking into possibly TiN coating blades, but they do it at 500 deg. F., a little to hot for carbon steel knife blades.

I'm looking to posibly coat some carbon steel folder blades, and I'm wondering what you've found to be the toughest, ie. won't scratch off easily. I know if you go digging around in sand and dirt anything will eventualy scratch up.

Has anybody tried Duracoat? What about Parkerizing? Or is there a Teflon coating out there?

Thanks,

Will

I Have no idea in this area, but I would really like to know something myself. I ran across teflon sheets at sheffield supply, but I have no idea if that is meant for coating your blades, or something else. Go here: http://www.sheffieldsupply.com/catalog/SupplyCat.pdf
and it is page 35. Where have you found TiNi coating? This interests me a lot, I have not found someone yet that will do this. Thanks for the info.

Hey, Will. I have used gun-kote on 1095 and it is very durable. It is baked on at 325 degrees for an hour. I do it for the final temper.

Howdy, D. M. Knives,
Gun coat ... obviously a baked on gun bluing method.
Cheap gun bluing in a bottle, is alright if you use junk like I do.
Its not a real even color, kinda blotchy, but will cover worse looking problem areas. I accidently discovered that vinegar would turn steel black, and have 24 black rail road spike knives. That is how I got into studing coatings, my question:

Where can I get me some gun coat?

Thanks, Knife

Incidentally i was just searching for information on materials used for blade coating (i was looking for the description of TiO2 coating application without using plasma - without ruining the temper and still ending up with good durable coating like Kershaw does with their "rainbow" knives) and i came across a webpage of some company selling boron carbide in aerosol cans for $35 (and in various other forms but aerosol sppeared to be most useful) which sounded very interesting.

Company had this silly short name, three letters starting with Z, something like ZYH, and i apparently based in the US.
