Blade Coatings

I am not very fond of the coated blades that more and more seem to be the norm lately. It seems to me if Spydy can use uncoated S30V on the Manix and make it look attractive, then other makers should offer the option too. I love my Combat Elite RRF but quite frankly the coating looks cheap. Are the coatings just a way to avoid polishing the blade to some degree? Is it cheaper for the manufacturer to mass produce a coated blade? Really, how often do we find ourselves in tactical situations with our EDC's where reflection is a real issue? The coated blades also often look like crap after some fairly moderate use where uncoated blades can be brought back to like new very easily. I am just looking for opinions. I was looking at my 2 BM Ruckus's and notice how much better the non-coated unserrated blade looks than the serrated blade of the same knife looks coated. The only way to buy the serrated version was to get the coating. For a premium!

Thanks, Brian

Strange - the "buy it now" price for the RUKUS on the bay often has the coated serrated for the same or less.

I like coated blades. Wouldn't mind seeing other colors, though I've read they cost more than the ubuquitous black.

Don't like reflections as they scream "knife" from a distance. And, I don't plan on signalling aircraft.

Coatings often assist in rust prevention, whether by application or holding oil better. I've only had one coated blade show signs of rust.

If they prepare the blade for coating then... My CS Recon I has a teflon finish and it peels off and that really chaps my hide! Many are taking it off and polishing the blade like CS shoulda done if they wont prepare the blade. I'm gonna wait until it is useless then...
