Alright this is kind of a weird question but I have been wondering for some time know if you spray paint your blade and handle (after its taken apart) does it affect the blade in any way. Also if there is a better way of changing the color please tell me.

it will affect the action of the kinfe and possibly the reassembly if you get paint on/near the pivot points and screw holes.

It won't affect the blades chemical properties or cutting ability. But it'll wear off quickly if it's ordinary paint.

Painting the handle can be a good idea though, to make the knife more visible if dropped or lost. Can't imagine why anyone would want to paint the blade...

I had an early Becker fixed blade knife that came with the blade painted in a thick light gray primer. Must've been some sort of protectant for a non-stainless steel. Good knife though, a real workhorse.

I'd bet a dollar that Becker coating isn't something that's just painted on.

Spray paint would work for a wall hanger. It won't last through much work. But it won't hurt the blade.

Two component epoxy would last longer than spray paint, but will still be scratched during usage.

These guys sell black oxide kits. They got one for carbon steel and one for stainless. I have never used them as I prefer uncoated blades. However, the finish would be more durable than any paint.

If you're feeling a bit more adventurous I saw a really cheap powerdercoat system at sears a couple weeks ago. The quality of the powerdercoat is a bit of an unknown, but a decent powdercoat job beats spray finishes any day of the week. If you don't want to go down that route (potentially spendy) there are also easy to get spray and bake firearms finishes from suppliers such as brownells and midway. Be sure to take note of the cure temperature of the finish and make sure the steel in question won't be affected by it.
