Let me start by saying I own 3 caks of different sizes and a Bonecutter. Now I'm looking for a knife with a slightly thinner blade profile that is livlier in the hand. I am currently considering a WW II, an M43, and a Tamang. Any insight from those of u that own any or all. I would be using them for primarily camp duties, wood splitting, bush clearing in my yard, and the occasional burglar :)

monk3yfist,

A 16.5" WWII would be lively and do camp duty. The Tamang would be a good all rounder as far as a knife goes. Its thinner spine will allow it to cut springier vegetation and cut and slice like a knife but it probably won't be that good of a chopper.

For a thinner blade profile to do all of your tasks, I would recommend the 18" Gelbu Special - Kami Sherpa's (Pala's) pick as best all-round khukuri for Gorkha issue.

Others will be chiming in shortly, I'm sure, with their good advice. Of course the best way to go is with the one that is calling to you at the time. All the best on your next choice.

Rick

edit: It appears that Yangdu may have some Tamang knives available.

Is it possible to get a chiruwa style Tamang? I know it would add weight but it would appear that I prefer that style handle. Just curious.

I will oder the Tamang Knife with a chiruwa style handle, thank you

Is a Tamang a good replacement for my machetes or am I looking for a gelbu, kobra or sirupati? As much as I hate to admit it there are just some things that my khukuri's don't do very well clearing smaller that 1" diameter brush is the main one.

The chiruwa handles IMO are best for helping balance out the weight of a longer blade. H.I.'s internal tangs are probably the most stout you'll ever see and are plenty strong.

How stout you may ask?

On a USMC KaBar knife, the tang is about 1/3 the width of the blade. An H.I. internal tang is a good 3/4 the width of the blade (at the bolster), if not more so.

I'll have to add that I've never broken an internal tang knife.

oldschool45-My 25" Kobra does pretty well on blackberries and other springier stuff. If you can get close to it, I'd say a Hasiya would be another suggestion. Mine is working out real well for various weeds that I can get closer to. And Yangdu has one with a Pala walnut handle she just put up for sale.

stickfred, I'm thinking 25 or 20" Kobra or tarwar. My user machetes are around 24". I'm waiting to see who pulls the trigger on the 15" Hasiya sight unseen. If it were a model I was looking for I'd have already nailed it lack of a picture would not have bothered me. Thanks

Thank you Yangdu, feel free to message me with pricing info. I'd be happy to paypal you now. Thank you.

settled then?

be wary of getting too long of a khuk and comparing it to a similiar length machete. it will be 2 to 3 times as heavy due to width.

i'd look at getting a chit or siru in 18-20inch. any longer is unneccesary IMO.

johnnyp83, weight don't bother me lack of "reach" does. I've gotten real comfortable with my 24" machete's. I should probably either leave it alone or order and handle modify a ~30"Imcasa. When you are climbing trees to trim them or going after blackberry or honeysuckle a longer blade keeps you away from the thorns. The tamang has my attention and I may have to look into one or get just a blade only.
I should just wait for an HI tarwar or katana. At 5'11" and 200 pounds I can pretty much swing anything I want to but I am slowly letting a "tennis elbow" heal:grumpy:
