I've noticed that blade designs seem to getting wider and wider, even on smaller knives. What are the pros and cons of a wider blade?

Well, wider blades should add strength in one direction. They should open a larger wound on a thrust cut. They create (sometimes) the design need for a wider, more hand filling handle. They should last longer under repeated sharpening (more metal).

Pros :
Usually sturdier - they require more force to shatter, and can be sharpened several times more.
Larger perceived balance point, and as a result, easier grip production.
Will (in theory) cut better in thrusts or piercing strikes.

Cons :
Heavier.
Harder to conceal.
May be uncomfortable for those with small hands.
Require more metal (moderately more expensive).
Are usually looked at less kindly by police/coworkers.

Thanks. I can understand everything exept how it would cut better in a thrust. Obviously larger channel being made- shouldn't that require more effort than a narrower knife?

Perhaps the 'better for thrusting' advantage is mainly just because it's a thicker, stronger blade and it be less likely to bend?
