i've read enough content thus far to conclude that some of the members here actually ENJOY cutting themselves; sorta get excited even, that they drew their own blood - accidentally or not - with their beloved edged tool.

i personally can't relate to that fetish. i've sliced myself once reeeeaal bad with a buck 501 years ago as a young kid cutting a durn fruit improperly, and by the grace of God haven't cut myself since {edit - i foolishly cut my thumb cutting an onion about 2 years ago, damn i suck at cooking & need to steer clear of the kitchen}.

i say "no" to my own blood leaving me, if i can help it.. some of the members here won't be able to honestly make that claim!

I'm with you. I see no good side to cutting ones self. Even little cuts aggravate me. Leaves me feeling that I should have been smarter about how I had used my knife.

Not that i would profess anyone do this to gain the experince, but--------

If you have taken a nasy cut, I mean real nasty cut you have a little more knowledge about the dynamics involved in pain, bio-mechanical issues, visual reality of seeing red [ your own ], and continuing to carry on and not freak due to lack of experience in such things.

Nothing gives one a firm footing in reality based knowledge than having been there and done that. After all, once you have put the blade to self or felt anothers steel and survived, you are no longer in the realm of conjecture and guess work about responses to and actions after the "letting".

I don't like getting cut and try not too. It's been a long time since I've been cut with a regular foloding knife or a fixed blade.

I am however a balisong flipper and getting cut comes with the territory there. I get small cuts with relative frequency, usually all it takes is a band-aid and I'm back to flipping again. I've never cut my self really badly though, thankfully. You do get used to the small nicks and slices after a while.

I cut myself the other day with my Marbles Fieldcraft. I was skinning out an eight-pointer, so at least it was a worthy cause.:)

double-edged balis are a killer.

ouch.

It's been years since I cut myself (maily kitchen duties) but recently got stung by my immersible hand blender on my third finger. 8 stitches later and lots of blood I'm better now. This is going to leave a mark and yes my finger looked like a piece of hamburger......not pretty.

Play with enough kinves for long enough, and you're bound to be bit.

It's just part of the territory.

Is it a sure thing? Of course not. There have been racing drivers who go through their whole careers without a single crash.

But the odds are.....

Now, do some people enjoy it? I wouldn't doubt it -- but do the majority? Definitely not.

Do many in our community, however, take to wearing their scars as a badge of honor? That, well, has more merit.

You left it plugged in when cleaning it?

Actually no. It is a cordless model and quite powerful I might add. As I put it back in the drawer the power button wasn't where it was on the old one and my finger was in the wrong place at the wrong time. YEEOOOWWWYYY!!

I can't say I enjoy cutting myself, but it always makes for a fun story to tell. I think most guys like to talk about wounds. If it's a cut from a knife, falling off a bicycle and sliding 20 feet on your face, smashing your thumb with a hammer, firing a nail into your finger with a nail gun, they are all accidents and no one intended for the accident to happen. However, why not talk about it? That's what we do. Now did you see a post where someone said "I was bored today, so I took out my knife and sliced open my hand! I sat and touched myself as I watched the blood flow!!" ?? I haven't seen any posts like that yet.

I'm definitely not into cutting myself although I have aquired some good scars and stories over the years from being too casual about using a blade. Getting cut, however, can be a learning experience.

Here are some lessons I learned the hard way:

-Never instinctively try to grab a knife that has slipped from your hand and is falling to the floor. Bad idea. Now I instinctively jump back and let that sucker fall. That way it won't cut your fingers and end up stuck in your thigh.

-Never take your eyes or your concentration off your knife when you're cutting. Even if it's to momentarily tell your kids not to bother you now because you're using a knife.

-Never enter one of those Lumberjack contests where the guys stand on a log and swing a heavy, razor sharp axe down, with all their might, to chop about 2" between their feet. (This one is NOT a personal experience).

Any other lessons learned the hard way?:D

It wasn't the knife that got me it was the refrigerator box!!!

The damn thing moved when I had a razor knife and I propped it up with my knee.

When I sliced luckily I missed my knee but caught good solid thigh!!!!
If only that box stayed still it would have been OK.

Yes since the 35 stitches I watch what I'm doing and my wife is cutting up the next box!!!

Aye. Never let your body's reflexes try to catch a katana that you held by the scabbard upside-down either. That was a nice one. Mental note to self: DumbAss!

I don't like being cut, but it will always happen. I wont bore you with my stories because they do not include stitches, only nerve loss in my left thumb. Anyway, I saw this sad looking girl working at McDonalds with slice marks all over her arms. She had on short sleves, and from finger to elbow was deformed from many many cuts. They mostly were from side to side not length wise. She with out any doubt has a cutting problem. Maybe a shrink could help her.

Angelina Jolee (sp) Has a knife fetish. I read that in an interview she said "after sex with her high school boy friend, they would have a knife fight in the bed room. She also claimed to have a problem with cutting herself all over her body. I never noticed any scares personally, but I kinda believe her.

Shaft did one hell of a dumb ass cut to his hand the other day.

With his Military in S30V he slices trough paper but on the way by caught his hand fliped up a nice chunck of skin. Luckaly he was able to stick back down and let it set.

I cut myself one with my SAK cut the finger right down to the bone from the top of the finger too. I was 9.

I was a histology tech at one point in my short life so far.

Let me tell ya, something that's mechanized to take micron thin slices...you handle that blade with R-E-S-P-E-C-T !

Sure, you'll ruin the edge if you even touch it with your hand, but as I found out once, you won't have much of a hand left after it touches you, either!

This is gonna sound kinda out there but the old men in my family got me into practicing an old Filipino superstition. Basically, if the first blood drawn on a new blade was your own, the blade would never be turned against you in combat. I don't know whether or not it works but none of my family elders, nor, I have ever had our own blades turned against us. :) Could just be the training.
